In het Portugese Curia ligt een thermaal park met dezelfde toepasselijke naam. Het is zo'n 14 ha groot. De Romeinen kenden het al, en genoten er van. Pas  rond 1865 werd het herontdekt en opnieuw geëxploiteerd. Een deel van de gebouwen die vervolgens werden geplaats heeft dan ook Art Nouveau kenmerken.  In de hoogtij dagen tussen 1920 en1950 was dit 'the place to be' voor het bestrijden van kwalen als  metabole- en endocriene ziekten, nierstenen, urineweginfecties, hypertensie, huidziekten en  reumatische ziekten. Daarvoor paste  men  behandelingen toe  met het water dat calcium en magnesium houdend is. Voor de ontspanning waren er een bioscoop, het wandel park, roeivijvers, een theesalon en….een casino.
In de tweede helft van de 20e eeuw was er geen  behoefte meer aan dit hele activiteitenpakket en raakte één en ander in verval, maar men ging wel dóór….  en de laatste decennia haakt men aan bij de wellness cultuur.           In Curia heeft dit er toe geleid dat er opmerkelijke zaken zijn waar te nemen zoals een verlichtingssysteem uit de begin tijd van de elektrisering dat door het park loopt (en dat men vooral zo moet houden!). En een prachtige hotel façade inclusief Art Nouveau mascarons, maar er achter, net buiten het blikveld knaagt de tand des tijd…

In the Portuguese town Curia you can find a thermal park with the same applicable name. It is about 14 ha in size. The Romans already knew it and enjoyed it. Only around 1865 it was rediscovered and re-exploited. Part of the buildings that were subsequently placed has Art Nouveau features. In its hightime days between 1920 and 1950, this was the place to be for combating ailments such as metabolic and endocrine diseases, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, hypertension, skin diseases and rheumatic diseases. To this end, treatments were applied with the water containing calcium and magnesium. For the relaxation there was a cinema, the strolling  park, rowing ponds, a tea room and ... a casino.
In the second half of the 20th century, there was no need for this whole package of activities, and it was in decline, but one went through. And in the last decades one has joined the wellness culture. In Curia this has led to noticeable things like a lighting system from the beginning of the electricity running through the park (and it has to stay like that! ) There's  a beautiful hotel façade including Art Nouveau mascarons, but behind it, just outside the sightfield,  the tooth of time is visible….
